Fall Leaf Science Experiment 🍂 🍁

Fall Leaf Science Experiment 🍂 🍁

We’re going to find out why leaves change colors in the fall!

 What you’ll need:

  • Leaves of different colors
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Jar(s)
  • Paper coffee filters

Step 1: Find some leaves of different colors- we found green, yellow, red, orange, and brown. The kinds of leaves you find will differ based on what part of the country you live in.  Break up the leaves into small pieces, and place them in a jar.

Step 2:  Pour rubbing alcohol over the leaves until they’re just covered. Mash them up in the jar just a bit.

Step 3:  Now place a coffee filter inside of the jar and liquid and let it sit for at least an hour.  You’ll notice the liquid being absorbed by the strip, separating and turning colors as the alcohol evaporates.

Step 4: Observe + Ask Questions- When you see the colors separating out, it’s because the chlorophyll is breaking down.  Chlorophyll is what makes leaves so green. When it breaks down in the fall and winter, the reds, oranges, and yellows really come out.  🤓
